Designing with Restraint

Whitespace is not empty. Notes on why the strongest design decision is usually the one you don't make.

Every element you add taxes every element already there.

Early in my design journey I equated effort with density: more sections, more effects, more proof of work. The pages felt busy, and busy reads as insecure.

Typography first

Start with the words and one excellent typeface pairing. If the page doesn’t work in black text on a warm background, no gradient will save it.

Motion as punctuation

Animation is a comma, not a paragraph. It should mark transitions and reward attention — never perform for its own sake.

The subtraction pass

Before shipping anything, I do one full pass where the only allowed action is deletion. It is always the pass that improves the work most.

Restraint is not minimalism as style. It is respect for the reader’s attention — the scarcest resource on any screen.
